Default small claim for tree trimming issue filed?

Hi all of you,
My tree's branches are growing into my neighbor's yard. He asked me to have them trimmed and I agreed. But somehow, I haven't been able to get it done as quickly as he wanted and he filed a small claims action and asking for $500. Plz reply if this is a valid thing to ask for in small claims court?
thanks for any reply.
